Home Office Computer Buying Checklist
It's easy to overspend on specs you don't need, or underspend on the ones that make a daily difference. Use this checklist to work out what your work really requires before you shop.
Match the computer to your work
| Email, documents, web, video calls | Mid-range processor, 8–16 GB memory, solid-state drive (SSD) |
|---|---|
| Spreadsheets, many tabs, light photo editing | 16 GB memory, faster processor, 512 GB SSD or more |
| Video editing, design, large files | 16–32 GB memory or more, dedicated graphics, 1 TB SSD or more |
Laptop or desktop?
- Do you need to work away from your desk? A laptop plus a dock gives you both
- Is desk space tight? A laptop or compact desktop helps
- Do you want to upgrade parts later? Desktops are usually easier to upgrade
Monitor
- Size: 24 in for most desks, 27 in if you sit a little farther back
- Resolution: 1080p at 24 in, 1440p or higher at 27 in
- Height-adjustable stand, or a mount so the top sits at eye level
- Connections match your computer (HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C)
Accessories that matter most
- Separate keyboard and mouse if you use a laptop
- A laptop stand or riser
- A surge-protected power strip
- An external drive or cloud backup
Before you buy
- Check the ports you need (USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, card reader)
- Check warranty length and what it covers
- Check the return window
- Plan how you'll move files from your old computer
