Webcam & Lighting Buying Guide
Better video calls usually come from better light first, sound second and the camera third. This guide explains what each spec means and which features are worth paying for at home.
Webcam: what the specs mean
| Resolution | 1080p is plenty for most calls. Higher resolutions help only if your calling app and connection support them. |
|---|---|
| Frame rate | 30 frames per second looks smooth for talking. 60 helps with fast movement, which calls rarely need. |
| Field of view | Around 75–90° frames one person well. Wider views show more of the room. |
| Autofocus and low-light | Useful if you move around or your room is dim. Good lighting still matters more. |
| Mounting | A clip that fits your monitor, or a thread for a small tripod, lets you get the camera to eye level. |
| Privacy | A built-in shutter or cover is handy. |
Lighting options
| Window light | Free and flattering when you face it. Changes through the day. |
|---|---|
| Desk lamp with a shade | A budget fix. Point it at a wall in front of you for softer light. |
| LED panel or ring light | Adjustable brightness and color. Place it in front of you, slightly above eye level. |
| Two-light setup | A main light in front and a softer fill to the side reduces shadows. |
Before you buy
- Check your laptop camera with good light first: it may be enough
- Check the cable or connection type matches your computer's ports
- Check how the camera mounts on your screen
- Check the return policy in case it doesn't suit your space
