Podcast Mic Buying Guide
The microphone is the heart of a home podcast setup, but the right choice depends on your room as much as your budget. This guide explains the main choices in plain language.
USB or XLR?
| USB mic | Plugs straight into your computer. Simple, fewer parts, a good place to start. |
|---|---|
| XLR mic | Needs an audio interface or mixer. More flexible and easier to upgrade later. |
| Hybrid (USB + XLR) | Start with USB, add an interface later without changing mics. |
Dynamic or condenser?
| Dynamic | Picks up mostly what's close to it. Better in untreated rooms with echo or background noise. |
|---|---|
| Condenser | More detailed and sensitive. Picks up more of the room, so it suits quiet, treated spaces. |
Accessories that matter
- A boom arm or stand so the mic sits close to your mouth
- A pop filter or foam windscreen to soften 'p' and 'b' sounds
- Closed-back headphones to monitor yourself
- A shock mount if you tap the desk while recording
Before you buy
- Clap test your room: a strong echo points to a dynamic mic
- Check your computer's ports for a USB mic
- Plan for one mic per person if you record guests in the room
- Check the return policy
